When the month of May comes to town, there really is no excuse not to embrace London’s great outdoors and start soaking up all that the city has to offer – whether that’s heading to a rooftop bar, visiting a city farm, making the most of the two (yes, two!) bank holidays or just lounging about in one of London’s best parks. We’ve selected the very best events and things to do across the capital during May, so lift yourself off the sofa, grab yourself an early-summer ice cream and start maxing out your London fun.
London Wine Week 2019 — Oenophiles rejoice: London Wine Week returns for 2019 with seven days of grapey goings on all across town and this year it’s free to pick up your digital pass giving you access to exclusive £5 wine flights ‘sip and snack’ pairings at over 125 participating bars.
The week will also see pop-ups, dinners, tastings and masterclasses happening in partner bars and restaurants. Keep an eye on this listings as events are announced. Whether spitting or swallowing, you’re sure to have a swilly good time. From May 13th to 19th.
Stanley Kubrick Exhibition — Visitors will have the chance to “get inside Stanley Kubrick’s head” in a huge exhibition that has toured the world, from Germany to South Korea. Expect to see original props and costumes from the films, as well as some rare photographs. There’ll also be a chance to relive iconic scenes from his movies, and see objects on display for the first time in the UK. You’ll be taken on a truly epic journey through Kubrick’s mind, following his fascination with design and architecture, which influenced every single one of his films. Colourscape Maze — For a real aesthetic treat, you’re going to want to head to Wembley Park over the May bank holiday (May 4th-6th). That’s where the enormous inflatable Colourscape maze can be found – a truly immersive psychedelic wonderland that you can wander around for free! The mind-bending structure consists of nearly 100 interlocking segments of colourful material, from small ovoid nooks to bright cathedral-like spaces. The results, which have been delighting guests for almost twenty years, are gorgeously relaxing and vivid – indeed, some have described it like being “wrapped in a rainbow”. From May 4th to May 6th.
RHS Chelsea Flower Show — See the grounds of the Royal Hospital Chelsea transformed with stunning horticultural displays for the prestigious RHS Chelsea Flower Show. World-renowned garden designers, plant specialists, florists and nurseries come together every year to show off cutting-edge garden designs and inspirational floral exhibits. Stroll through show-stopping and award-winning gardens. Discover rare flowers and plants, and creative floral artworks. Spot emerging gardening trends. And browse the horticultural products on sale, from gardening gadgets to sculptures and plants. From May 21th to May 25th.
Museums at Night – Stuff the usual opening hours and hang out at your favourite cultural institutions after dark at the May edition of Museums at Night. The festival takes place across the UK from May 15 – May 18, with a series of seriously special after-hours events at some of London’s best galleries, museums and attractions.
